Necessary steps for the success of the National Hydrogen Strategy

With the NWS Action Plan, the German government is laying the foundations for private investment in the economic and sustainable production, transport and use of hydrogen. This can also contribute to overcoming the consequences of the Corona crisis and revitalising the German and European economy. To this end, the Federal Government will implement various measures for the following areas in a first phase of the market ramp-up until 2023. The measures outlined are the responsibility of the relevant ministries and will be financed by them within the framework of the applicable budget and financial plan estimates. Within the framework of the interdepartmental design of the NWS, however, strong attention is paid to a systemic view. This means that supply, provision and demand are always considered together.

The measures described in the action plan represent the first phase of the NWS, in which the market ramp-up and the foundations for a functioning domestic market will be initiated by 2023.
In parallel, pioneering topics such as research and development and international issues will be advanced. In the next phase, from 2024, the emerging domestic market will be consolidated and the European and international dimension of hydrogen will be shaped and used for the German economy. Thus, the idea of continuous development is anchored in the NWS from the outset.

Hydrogen production
Reliable, affordable and sustainable hydrogen production is the basis for its future use. In order to achieve a significant cost degression in the production of hydrogen, generation plants must now be built for technology demonstration on an industrial scale and a corresponding scaling must be achieved.
