Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

“The energy transition can only succeed with comprehensive sector coupling. Green hydrogen is a key element in storing the renewable electricity generated in our state in the long term and making it usable for other sectors. The development of a green hydrogen economy is an economic and structural policy opportunity for the coastal federal states and especially Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We want to seize this opportunity and quickly advance and implement the hydrogen strategy.”

Christian Pegel Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalisation

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers optimal natural conditions for generating electricity from renewable energies. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was the first federal state to cover its electricity demand from renewable energies since 2013. However, it is not enough just to produce electricity. To compensate for volatility, storage facilities are needed.
In addition, we also want to use the energy transition for a mobility and heating transition and promote the linking of the transport, heating and electricity sectors. Sector coupling opens up the way to combine economic growth and climate protection and to implement the energy transition holistically.
With the help of hydrogen, both can succeed: storing renewable electricity and thus balancing out natural fluctuations, as well as using renewable electricity for transport and heating applications. A central goal of the energy transition in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is also to make greater use of the electricity produced here.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern already has a diverse range of players in the hydrogen economy. In addition to technology manufacturers (electrolysis/fuel cells) and potential users (e.g. local transport, maritime mobility), there is a great deal of expertise in the area of research.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is particularly committed to improving the currently difficult economic framework conditions for hydrogen projects. To this end, concrete proposals for legislative changes have been submitted, among other things, which are intended to enable sector coupling projects within the framework of experimental clauses.

With the North German Hydrogen Strategy, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, together with the other northern German states, is committed to hydrogen as a technology of the future. With a joint hydrogen strategy, the northern German forces are to be bundled and large-scale use of hydrogen technologies supported.
